Starlink supports in-motion use at speeds up to 550 mph (471 knots) in authorized locations. Effective November 7, 2025, this limit will adjust to 450 mph (391 knots). If this affects your connectivity needs, especially for high-speed in-motion applications, consider upgrading to a Starlink Aviation plan (20GB or Unlimited).
Service Plans That Support In-Motion Use
Roam 50GB
- Coverage includes inland waterways and territorial waters (up to 12 nautical miles from shore).
- Limited to 5 consecutive days and 60 days per year in these waters.
Roam Unlimited
- Includes the same coverage as Roam 50GB.
- Offers optional Ocean Mode for extended use:
- Stay connected beyond 12 nautical miles from land.
- Exceed the 5 consecutive days / 60 days per year limit.
- Receive higher network priority than Roam data.
- Toggle Ocean Mode on or off anytime in your account.
- Example: turn on Ocean Mode when heading offshore, and disable it once back within 12 nautical miles to return to standard Roam data.
Local Priority
- Supports in-motion use on land.
Global Priority
- Supports in-motion use on land, coastal, and international waters.
- Offers prioritized speeds and flexible data options wherever Starlink is available.
Plans That Do Not Support In-Motion Use
- In-motion use is not permitted on Residential or Residential Lite plans, per the Fair Use Policy.
Important Notes
- Actuated Starlink models (with motors) are not recommended for in-motion use due to safety risks.
- Ocean Mode activates immediately upon enabling it in your account and remains on until manually turned off.
- Ocean Mode can be used on land (billed per GB) and provides higher priority than Roam data.
- Exceeding data limits without adding more data will restrict internet access on the ocean.
Supported Hardware & Warranty for In-Motion Use:
- Starlink Performance (Gen 3)
- Starlink Performance (Gen 2)
- Starlink Standard
- Starlink Mini
Not recommended: Actuated Starlinks (e.g., Standard Actuated, Performance Gen 1) — these contain motors and are not designed for in-motion use. Improper installation or use may cause injury, property damage, or void your warranty if the equipment is damaged while moving.
